All of our products are made from trees grown and oil distilled at Viphya Plantation in Northern Malawi. All our products are of high quality and made and packaged with great care by our expert staff in Viphya and Lilongwe.
lemon eucalyptus oil (citriodora oil)
Also known as citriodora oil, our lemon eucalyptus essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves of our plantation. Since 2009, we have selectively grown the trees from our own seed stock ensuring good yields. We hand prune and coppice the trees on a rigorous bi-annual cycle that takes time and expertise.
Our oil has a unique fresh citrus scent – a clean, crisp palette - and is excellent quality. It is grown and distilled at an altitude of 1800m where the annual rainfall is around 1200mm.
Our oil is very attractive for a wide selection of clients and uses, with its citronellal percentage of well over 80% and a citronellol level of well below 5%.
This clear fragrant oil is excellent for use in perfume, cosmetics, insect repellents, and even medicinally. To date, we have sold our oil regionally and in Europe.
We sell in ton quantities, FOB or CIF, and package in UN approved IBCs or drums. Please email us for availability and pricing.
ESSENTIAL OILS
KHP produces a number of essential oils on a smaller scale, but they are produced upon order. They include:

Sustainable Charcoal
Our charcoal however is sustainable, sold nationally and can be bought with a clear conscience. We half-orange brick kilns for making our charcoal. 800kg of wood can be loaded into each one and over 270kg of charcoal comes from each of the kilns every four-day production cycle.
The logs we use come from the trees we raise from seed, that are planted and tended by us for the leaves to be distilled for essential oils. The timber left over is a by-product of our business so we’re using it to try and help curb Malawi’s energy crisis. We sell 5kg premium bags, 15kg bulk bags, and our new 1.5kg bags.
We are proud that Kawandama Hills was the first company to be issued with a sustainable charcoal licence to produce and retail legal charcoal in Malawi. This was achieved through the Department of Forestry in October 2015.
KHP has been at the forefront of the charcoal debate in Malawi, initially through lobbying and now by showing a working forestry model producing both a cash and fuel crop.
We endeavour to keeping growing fuel wood responsibly, providing an example of how a sustainable model can be developed.

NATURAL sanitisers using P-Menthane diol RICH OIL (PMDRO)

Virisafe is KHP’s natural and effective sanitiser brand. It uses active ingredient P-menthane 3,8 diol (PMD- rich oil) that is produced in Africa. It is a natural, non-toxic, and verified ingredient by the European Biocide Directive as an insect repellent and is registered by the Pesticides Control Board of Malawi.
The advantage of PMDRO is that it provides a residual, lasting, santising effect for 3+ hours after each application. Alcohol-based products will kill viruses and germs instantly but reinfection can occur immediately. This residual effect and its non-toxicity is what makes this active ingredient unique. Virisafe’s enhanced formula is safe for kids, non-sticky and has a fresh natural fragrance. This is the first sanitising range in Africa to use this special active ingredient and one of only a few in the world.
For local sales, we have backing from the Ministry of Health, the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) and the Pesticides Control Board.

NATURAL MOSQUITO REPELLENT
Virisafe Natural Mosquito repellent
Natural & Safe Body Spray
Kawandama Hills through its Virisafe brand has launched its Repellent for Africa campaign and this aims to provide locally made, quality, low cost mosquito repellent to help combat malaria and tropical disease.
Made from 30% PMD rich oil, it has a 8hour repellency effect and is a strong deterrent for mosquitoes. It is a body spray and is very safe for recurring use on skin.
The repellent can be used to combat ticks, midges, bed bugs and sprayed onto the mosquito net. However, it is best applied on the skin and leaves a refreshing smell that has become Kawandama’s signature aroma.
